Organizational Redesign

Organizational Redesign maps the core patterns for redesigning organizations around humans and AI, from automating individual roles to orchestrating dynamic human-AI workflows.

The Organizational Redesign framework: core patterns for redesigning work around humans and AI, spanning worker value shifts (automation, productivity, augmentation), traditional workflows, elemental Humans + AI workflows (human-AI sandwich, AI with humans-in-the-loop), and high-performance dynamic work orchestration.

Overview

As AI becomes capable of real work, the unit of redesign shifts from the individual task to the shape of the workflow itself. Organizations that only automate existing roles capture a fraction of the value and often degrade the work; the larger gains come from rethinking how humans and digital workers are combined.

Organizational Redesign lays out the core patterns along that path. It moves from worker value shifts, where a human role is substituted, made more productive, or augmented, through traditional and process-automated workflows, to elemental Humans + AI workflows such as the human-AI sandwich and AI with humans-in-the-loop, and on to high-performance designs built on dynamic work orchestration. Read together, the patterns trace a progression from swapping people for tools toward orchestrating humans and AI as a single adaptive system.

The core patterns

Worker value shifts

  • Automation
    • Human worker → Substitution → Digital worker
  • Productivity
    • Human worker → Task allocation → Digital worker
  • Augmentation
    • Human worker → Cognitive support → Digital worker

Traditional workflows

  • Human workflows
    • Human worker → Human worker → Human worker
  • Process automation
    • Human worker → Process automation → Process automation → Process automation

Elemental Humans + AI workflows

  • Human-AI sandwich
    • Human worker → Frame tasks
    • Digital worker → Perform tasks
    • Human worker → Review/refine
  • AI with humans-in-the-loop
    • Digital worker → Task or decision
    • Human worker → Approve/feedback
    • Digital worker → Execute/improve

High-performance Humans + AI workflows

  • Dynamic work orchestration
    • Human worker + Digital workers interacting dynamically with an orchestrator

When to use it

Use Organizational Redesign when the question is not how to bolt AI onto today’s structure but how to reshape the work: diagnosing which pattern a team currently operates and what the next step up looks like; choosing between substitution, productivity, and augmentation for a given role; designing workflows that keep humans in the right positions rather than removing them wholesale; and setting a direction for redesign that leads toward orchestrated Humans + AI rather than piecemeal automation.
